SERIOUSLY? Did Aliens Snatch September??
by Julie Broad
Can someone tell me how it is possibly October tomorrow? I am serious. I just can’t understand how September slipped away from me with barely a blip. After our recent alien sighting (see below) I am wondering if they had something to do with the disappearance of September.
I don’t have grand lessons to share with you today but I do have a couple of updates for you – including some pictures on the 70′s house renovation we’re working on.
Canadian Carnival of Real Estate
At least the month ended on a high note with the first ever Canadian Carnival of Real Estate jam packed with awesome articles from all over the country and even a few from the US (& where we took home the prize for our post on How to Deal with Tenants). I’m pretty pumped to have a Canadian Carnival and think it has a pretty great future given that there are more and more fabulous Canadian real estate bloggers posting good stuff now! Woohoo! And thanks to Rachelle at Landlord Rescue for taking charge and starting it.
That 70′s House Renovation Project Update
2 weeks into owning this house and renovating we’ve already made tremendous progress on the upstairs work. Downstairs, on the other hand, has ground to a screeching stop while we await word from the City of Nanaimo regarding our application to put in a legal secondary suite.
It’s a longer story than I feel like typing when all I really wanted to do was show you the funny pictures of my Mom from when she spray painted the ceilings of the house. But, the basic outline of the situation is that once we had possession of the home and fully understood what the renovation would involve we realized that we actually had a perfect opportunity to turn this into a wonderful strong cash-flowing long term buy and hold property by adding a legal secondary suite. We had originally bought the home for our rent to own program but it’s always nice to add good quality properties to our portfolio for the long term too!
Anyway – long story short – we had to hire someone to draft some plans for us and now we’re waiting for the proper permits to get the big stuff done (electrical, plumbing, dry wall etc.). In the meantime we can carry on completing most of the upstairs. So here’s a few shots from the latest progress.
Kitchen is painted, light fixtures are installed and the cupboards are 60% installed … but all I have a picture of today is the light fixtures:
My Mom tackled the big job of spray painting all the ceilings. It looked like a snow storm and an alien invasion all happened at the same time:
Yep – that’s what I’ve got for you tonight! Dave and I will be there all day Saturday so we’ll get more shots of the progress for you and we’ll definitely capture any other alien sightings that take place.
And Off to October
Monday our new office admin person starts and the only people more excited than us are the folks at our accountant’s office waiting for a bunch of contracts, receipts and other documentation from us! I am pretty sure they were more happy to hear the news than we were when we found the perfect person for the job (or, at least we hope she’s perfect for it!!).
We’re already planning to buy new skis so that when we’re not buying houses this winter we’ll be on a ski hill somewhere swooshing our way down.
I know … it’s a tough life sometimes but we try our best to enjoy it.
